Caracas, the lively historic capital
Venezuela is a country with a rich political history, troubled by wars of independence, slavery and dictators. The Venezuelan people remain conscious of this heritage, visible in the country's lively and energetic culture. The capital of Venezuela, Caracas, a very lively city located on the coast, displays the traces of its history. Founded by the Spanish in 1567, it is filled with treasures of colonial architecture and monuments from later periods. The church of Saint Francis is well worth a visit. This lively city beats to the rhythm of the daily life of its inhabitants, the energy of its shops and its rapid economic development. A magnificent city which you can discover with a regular Air France flight to its airport.
Paradisiacal beaches worthy of the Caribbean
Venezuela is filled with sumptuous beaches on the Caribbean coast and archipelagos near its coastline. The isles of Los Roques are among the most fascinating and the best known. Located 150 km from the capital, Caracas, the archipelago includes about 360 paradisiacal islands and forms a natural breeding ground for fish, with its fauna, flora and rich seabed. This local paradise is protected by a coral reef leaving it untouched by cyclones and storms. In the east of the country, the Medina and Colorada beaches are well known for their fine sand and turquoise water. The site of your dreams which you can discover with an Air France flight.
A country with a remarkable geographical diversity
Venezuela has a fascinating biodiversity, particularly visible in the Orinoco Delta and the Amazon Forest. Its geography is extremely varied, as is its climate. The tepuys, high geological formations located in the south-east of the country, in the Gran Sabana region, are an unmissable sight. They send out spectacular waterfalls, such as the 1 000 metre-high Salto Angel, the highest waterfall in the world, discovered by an American explorer by the name of Jimmy Angel.
In the west, Venezuela meets the Andes Mountains and the Bolivar Peak, reaching an altitude of nearly 5 000 metres. Visitors can take the ring road to reach the Espejo Peak (”.irror”, in Spanish), located opposite the summit. The desert in the north-west, with the Coro dunes, makes a contrast to the mountainous regions.
